LEGO® Therapy Club
Using children’s love for LEGO®, imagination, construction and play. Children come together for a play based therapy session to build their confidence in social and communication skills.
LEGO® Club is designed to support children to learn skills such as turn-taking, sharing, listening, conversation, teamwork, shared attention and problem-solving.
This evidence based program is based on the research of Dr Dan Le Goff, Clinical Neuropsychologist from America. Dr Dan Le Goff found that LEGO® allowed children to work together in a collaborative way therefore allowing children to draw on their strengths to practice communication and social skills while having fun.
Suitable for:
Children aged 6 - 12 years
Intake Process
An initial 1 on 1 child session is conducted with Annette as a way of introduction to LEGO® Therapy. This session is 40 minutes and children receive a social story to help support their transition into LEGO® Therapy Club.
GROUP OUTLINE
LEGO® Therapy Club is a weekly program running during school terms.
Sessions are 45minutes in duration where children work in small groups to build a model following instructions with each child assigned a role:
an engineer - who has the instructions
a supplier - who has the bricks
a builder - who builds the model
The children take turns in the different roles, and together they build the model. Towards the end of the session (if time permitting) the children have some freestyle construction time and are then encouraged to share and play with their creations with together.
LEGO Therapy Club also compromised of group time where children come together at the start of the session to check-in. This is a lovely way for the children to get to know each other and to foster friendships and develop empathy.
At the conclusion of the session children come together for ‘show and tell’ to share their creations. The children love to come together to see their friends wonderful creations. This is a fantastic opportunity to build on their communication skills and confidence.
This really is a wonderful nurturing program that encourages children to use communication skills, social skills such as turn taking, sharing, and use problem-solving skills.
